The UN Denounces the Glorification of Nazism

20.11.2009 16:37

Glorification of those involved in Nazi crimes is absolutely inadmissible. It was declared by the Russian representative Grigory Lukiantsev, speaking in the United Nations Headquarters in New York at the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly before voting on the Draft Resolution “Inadmissibility of certain practices that contribute to fuelling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.”

“Such “feeding” of contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance cause deep concern,” said the Russian representative.

The Draft Resolution was approved by 124 votes “for” with 55 abstentions. Only the USA made a stand against.

Grigory Lukiantsev noted that the Resolution prepared on Russia’s initiative obtained wide support of co-authors from all regions of the world. The representative of Moscow reminded the UN member states that this year the tragic date is commemorated - 70 years since the beginning of the Second World War. “The war that lead to numberless innocent victims, including victims of practical realization of various theories of racial or ethnic superiority. The question is about crying war crimes and crimes against humanity, which is particularly confirmed by the Nürnberg Tribunal sentence. To deny it would mean to try to rewrite the history,” Grigory Lukiantsev emphasized.

He underlined that today one has to more frequently encounter such a denial, “when monuments to Nazis are unveiled with a formal ceremony, days of liberation from Nazism are declared mourning days, and those who opposes the consigning to oblivion of the memory of those who fought in the years of the Second World War against nazism, undergo arrests.”

The Russian representative added that in some countries one tries to elevate those who fought against the anti-Hitlerite coalition or collaborated with Nazis, to the level of national heroes and heroes of national liberation movement. “We are sure that the question is not about political correctness, but about the most undisguised cynicism and blasphemy with respect to those who had liberated the world from the horrors of national socialism. Moreover, the question is about penal acts by implication of Article four of the International convention about liquidation of all forms of racial discrimination,” the Russian representative underlined.
